Parents hoping to give their children the best education from an early age are best off doing so in the North Side, according to a recent ranking of San Antonio’s elementary schools.
Roan Forest Elementary School took the top spot in the ranking from Children at Risk, followed by Hardy Oak and Vineyard Ranch elementary schools, all located in North East ISD. Schools in the North East and Northside school districts accounted for 15 of the top 20 schools listed.
Children at Risk, an educational research group, ranked more than 346 elementary schools in the area as a way to guide parents and "spark important community dialogue on the quality of public education in Texas."
The nonprofit ranked the schools based on three factors: student achievement, campus performance and growth. Each of the factors calls on data such as standardized test scores, racial make-up and percentage of economically disadvantaged students. Schools are ranked based on a composite score from the three factors.
Of the 346 schools ranked, 58 earned an F grade. Southwest Prep Northwest Elementary was the area’s lowest-scoring campus.

Children at Risk will released a state-wide ranking of elementary, middle and high schools on June 4.
